Installation of the water meters is now complete and residents will receive their utility bills over the next few days. Some of you may notice a lengthy billing cycle (five to six weeks) instead of the typical four weeks that you are used to seeing. This unusual billing cycle is the result of a software glitch that was recently discovered by staff.

Based on the overwhelming popularity of the Town's new curbside recycling collection, we will begin running the service on a weekly basis effective immediately. The Red Recycling Route will be running every Thursday and the Green Recycling Route will run every Friday - all for $4 per month.

The Town's trash collection schedule will shift in 2018 to a three-day collection effort. The new schedule will allow for efficient collection and faster response to missed collections. WastePro carts are being delivered to customers this week and the new collection schedule starts in 2018.

Five years after launching residential trash collection, Atoka plans to roll out curbside recycling to customers in 2018. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen recently approved a plan to add curbside recycling while giving current customers the ability to opt-out of the program.

The bridge at the south end of Maple Drive has now re-opened to traffic. The 12-ton rated bridge, damaged by an overweight crossing last year, was closed for two months as the replacement project was completed.

The Town of Atoka maintained its Aa2 credit rating in the annual Moody's review of financial condition. Citing an "extremely small" pension liability, "healthy economy" and "sound financial management", the Town continues its solid fiscal performance while offering outstanding municipal services.

As a part of the Town's fiscal year 2018 budget, the Town will be simplifying the permit fee structure and establishing a new construction value calculation method. The permit structure, mirroring the structure currently in place in Tipton County and the City of Munford, goes into effect July 1, 2017.

In response to increased wholesale water costs incurred over the past several years, the Town of Atoka is increasing water rates and select service fees. The rate increase, the first water rate increase in more than seven years, will increase the average water bill by $1.72.

The Atoka Greenway Trail took a major step towards completion today as the funding was awarded for the second phase in Atoka's Greenway Trail Project. Phase II will complete the connection between Pioneer and Walker Parks - providing safe, pedestrian access between the parks and more than 2 miles of paved and illuminated trail.

A project more than four years in the making took a major step forward this week as the Board of Mayor and Aldermen awarded a contract for construction to Rose Construction of Covington, TN. The project, connecting Walker Park to a trailhead at Elizabeth Drive, is expected to get under construction in July.

The new Atoka Town Hall - under construction for the past year - opened to the public at 8 am on Monday, May 16. Utility and tax payment transactions, Code Enforcement, Parks & Recreation and Administration are all located in the new building.

The Atoka Public Works Department will be working over the next several weeks to flush and maintain water lines throughout Atoka. This may result in temporary discoloration or "cloudiness" in the water - something that can be remedied by running a faucet for a few minutes until the water clears.

Following the precautionary water advisory issued yesterday for parts of the Atoka water system, bacteriological testing has indicated that there was no contamination of the water supply due to the water main break in the Munford water system. Independent testing, conducted after the break yesterday, confirms the safety of the drinking water supply. The advisory notice regarding boiling water has been rescinded for all customers of the Atoka water system.

As a part of enhanced credit card processing security, the Town of Atoka's Public Works office now accepts Apple Pay and Android Pay for utility bill payments. The Town's window transaction terminals have also been upgraded to accommodate new EMV chip cards.

The Commercial Appeal's annual Memphis Most list is out for 2015 and Atoka-based builder Apex Home Builders was voted the top home builder in the mid-South. Apex Home Builders is currently building in subdivisions in the Memphis region – including several in Atoka – and operates their model home in Atoka's Lochmeade subdivision.

The Town of Atoka and the Three Star Fire Department have executed an agreement to provide automatic and mutual aid between fire departments effective immediately. The Atoka and Three Star Fire Departments, though operating separately, will begin working together to protect life and property in South Tipton County.

The Atoka Fire Department, in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal's Office, is offering free smoke detectors and installation for residents of Atoka that do not have a detector. Detectors, when properly installed and functioning, save lives by alerting to smoke and helping occupants get to safety in a fire.

The Town of Atoka has taken the first step in moving the Atoka Greenway Trail project forward by today issuing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for an engineering firm to design and oversee the project. The Atoka Greenway, to eventually connect Walker and Pioneer Parks, hopes to be under construction on Phase I in 2016.

W. Daryl Walker was re-elected for his second term as Mayor of Atoka in the 2014 Atoka Municipal Election. Also re-elected to four (4) year terms were incumbent Aldermen Barry Akin, Danny Feldmayer and Mike Joyner. A referendum question on wine sales in grocery and convenience stores was passed by voters - allowing sales to being in 2016.

Former Atoka Mayor Charles L. Walker passed away yesterday evening after a battle with cancer. Charles Walker served the Town of Atoka for more than 40 years as Mayor - first elected to that post in 1969. Former Mayor Walker was 82.

All requests to collect ice storm debris must be submitted to the Town by the end of the day on March 31. Even though the brush may not be collected by March 31, the request for collection must be received today.

2013 property tax payments must be received by Friday, March 1, 2014 to avoid late payment interest and penalties. Delinquent 2012 property tax payments must be received by Monday, March 31, 2014 at Atoka Town Hall. Unpaid 2012 property taxes will be turned over to the Chancery Court for collection.

Atoka Tax Clerk Juanita Ayers was among a group of approximately 70 municipal finance personnel who completed the Certified Municipal Finance Officers (CMFO) education requirements in 2013. Each CMFO completed 11 courses covering eight different topics and successfully passed 11 exams demonstrating their understanding of the various functions of municipal financial operations.

The proposed low-impact amphitheater project at Pioneer Park has been delayed to a future fiscal year as the Town of Atoka has been approved to shift the project's grant funding to the Walker Park splash pad project. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved revision to the Atoka Town Charter during its regular meeting on June 5, 2012. The revisions were passed by the General Assembly on April 24 and signed by the Governor on May 10 in Nashville. The changes mark the most significant revisions to the Town charter since its drafting in 1911.

In an effort to protect Town infrastructure while also providing uninterrupted water and sewer service to the customers of Atoka Water, the Town has joined the statewide one-call system, Tennessee811. Tennessee811 provides utility operators an opportunity to mark utilities prior to excavation or digging by property owners, municipalities or other utility operators.

Atoka Water is lowering the installation fee for auxiliary water meters by $300 effective April 1, 2012. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen also recently approved adding an after-hours fee to the Atoka Water fee structure. Rates for water and sewer service remain unchanged.
